WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - The UNCW National Pan-Hellenic Council came together with non-profit Support the Port to raise awareness about violence in Wilmington Monday. 

Students and staff signed their names on stop signs pledging to stay aware of violence in the Port City, and do what they can to help stop it. The signed pledges were then displayed in the student union for everyone to see.

Cedric Harrison came up with the idea after the tragic loss of his brother. 19-year-old Taaron Jones was stabbed to death outside the Rhino Club five years ago Sunday. 

"His music was just starting to go up and I was trying to get him out of the neighborhood to show him what else was out there," Harrison said. "I want kids in the community to know there's more out there than the four corners they grew up on."

Harrison has been posting signs for months, in parks, playgrounds, and memorials  for those who lost their lives to violence. He says he has no plans to stop.

"We aren't there right before the violence is about to start happening but these signs can be there," Harrison said. "They can be a positive spark that may create somebody to make a better decision than the one they are about to make."

UNCW student and NPHC president Marquis Duncan said he signed to hold himself accountable.

"I believe and support our youth and I want better for our communities."
