Support The Port Foundation, Inc. Presents: Come Through It's Lit! Book Drive & Literature Initiative.

Support The Port Foundation, Inc. partnered with businesses around the city of Wilmington, NC for the Come Through, it’s Lit! Book Drive & Literacy Initiative. From February 1 to February 27, select businesses around the city collected books for all ages and all reading levels. Special emphasis was place on collecting books that highlighted African-American History and/or be written by African-American Authors.

On the last Saturday of February, local barbers and hair stylist gave out free haircuts and hairstyles to children in attendance that read books as they received styling services. The children and parents that came to the event at DC Virgo Middle school were greeted at the door with smiling faces from Support The Port volunteers. After signing in, guests were able to immediately grab a book from our library of books that were arranged by grade level. Food was provided by Billy Ray’s Family restaurant, who sponsored hot dogs, barbecue sandwiches, coleslaw, and cookies. Children read their books while waiting for their turn to get their haircut or hairstyle. Once the kids sat in the chair the barber or hairstylist listened to them read out loud, and help them with any reading challenges along the way. At the conclusion of their reading session, the child was able to keep that book in addition to another book of their choice.

At the end of the event, a “Milly Rock” dance contest was held. The 1st place winner received a Support The Port “Good Grades Starter Kit”, a book bag filled with school supplies. All guest also left with calendars that feature a monthly highlight of North Carolina born African-American leaders. This event was a true “LITuation Situation” with the goal of enhancing the aptitude of children through literacy.

Support The Port’s next event is on March 26th at No Limit Sports & More Boxing Center with the Wilmington, North Carolina native Professional Boxer Lamar Russ (as seen on HBO and Showtime). Register now for this free event at http://www.supporttheport.com/events/
